Breeding cows and beef calves aren’t the same – and neither is the relationship you build with them. In the cowshed with Phil at Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, this is about cattle behaviour, purpose, temperament and low-stress stockmanship, and how our family farm works calmly and respectfully with breeding animals and young beef calves at very different s#farmingjourneytages of life.
In the cowshed we use Bokashi on straw and manure to speed up fermentation, reduce smells and ammonia loss, lock nitrogen into stable organic forms, and boost beneficial bacteria and fungi. That biologically active bedding then goes back to the fields and grassland, improving soil structure, water holding, root growth and carbon storage – a simple, regenerative way of turning waste into living fertility and building healthier pasture and crops from the ground up.
