Wiggly Wigglers

At Lower Blakemere, we’ve found that farming and gardening are two sides of the same coin. That’s why we set up Wiggly Wigglers, a business that helps keep the farm sustainable while promoting natural gardening methods to our customers. We’ve been banging the drum for composting, soil health, and supporting wildlife for many years now :) From worm composting and Bokashi bins to birdseed and feeds, everything we sell is about sustainable practices that work with nature, not against it.
Farming Meets Gardening
Running a farm isn’t easy, so diversifying is key to keeping things ticking over. Wiggly Wigglers helps support the farm by offering products that connect the two worlds of farming and gardening. It’s a natural fit. We supply everything from Bokashi composting kits, which are fantastic for turning food waste into a rich soil conditioner, to wormeries that produce top-quality compost (vermicompost, if you want to get fancy). Our birdseed mixes are crafted to attract wildlife to your garden, while also supporting the farm’s ecosystem. The idea is simple – healthy gardens need healthy soil, and healthy farms need healthy soil too.
What’s interesting is that soil health isn’t just about plants; it’s linked to gut health as well. The microbes and good bacteria that help break down organic matter in your compost pile aren’t that different from the ones that help you digest food. By composting with Bokashi or a wormery, you’re building soil full of the same kinds of life that keep both plants and people healthy.
Composting and Soil Health
If you’ve ever looked into natural gardening, you’ll know that composting is key, and we’ve been shouting about it from the rooftops for years. Whether it’s our Bokashi bins or worm composting kits, composting is the perfect way to enrich your soil without having to buy tonnes of chemical fertilisers. You could say it’s our bread and butter.

Bokashi is a fantastic system, especially for anyone who doesn’t want the hassle of turning compost heaps or dealing with traditional bins. It ferments food waste and creates a liquid fertiliser (aka ‘Bokashi juice’ – not as tasty as it sounds, but your plants will love it) that you can use on your garden. The remaining solid material can be dug straight into your soil, boosting its microbial life and improving its structure. It’s a win for you and a win for the farm, as it keeps waste out of landfill while improving soil health.
And then there’s worm composting. We often joke that the worms do all the hard work around here. Wormeries are an efficient way to break down kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost, and they’re perfect for people who want to reduce their household waste and give their plants a boost at the same time. Plus, kids love the worms, so it’s a great way to get the next generation interested in composting!
Bringing Wildlife to Your Garden
It’s not just about composting though. Our range of birdseed and wildflower seeds helps attract wildlife to your garden, which is crucial for a healthy ecosystem. The farm has always been home to a diverse range of birds, insects, and animals, so it made sense to share some of that with our customers. The more birds and pollinators you can bring into your garden, the better it is for both your plants and the wider environment. It’s about closing the loop between farming and gardening.

Awards and Recognition
While we’ve been working hard on the farm and in the Wiggly Wigglers business, we’ve picked up a few awards along the way. We’re chuffed to have won the Global Dell Business Award for customer service, The Farmers Weekly Diversification award and we’ve even been recognised as E-commerce Business of the Year. These awards support the idea that small businesses like ours, grounded in farming, can make a real difference in promoting sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Of course, none of this would be possible without our team: Heather, San, Rach, Lyd, and Rob – a small but mighty crew who keep things running smoothly.
A Down-to-Earth Approach
We’re firm believers that farming and gardening should be down-to-earth, literally and figuratively. We’re not about gimmicks or unnecessary bells and whistles. Our focus is on practical, natural solutions that work both for the farm and for your garden. That’s why we’ve always promoted sustainable methods like composting and encouraging wildlife, long before it was trendy.
So, whether you’re looking to boost your soil health with worm compost, attract more birds with our seed mixes, or simply find a way to make use of your kitchen waste with Bokashi, we’ve got something that links your garden back to the farm.
