At Lower Blakemere Farm, we take pride in producing and packaging our own birdseeds and feeds, using a hands-on approach that’s both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. We mix the seeds ourselves using an Alvan Blanch mixer and source the ingredients as sustainably as possible, growing what we can and buying from farmer friends in the local area and where the crops grow best.

By handling every part of the process ourselves, we’re able to offer top-quality feed at lower prices, while minimising our environmental impact. Here’s how we do it:

How We Mix and Bag Our Seed

  1. Blowing Ingredients into the Mixer: We use an air system to blow individual seed components up into the Alvan Blanch mixer. This efficient method ensures an even mix every time and the operation is run by Dennis who ensures the seeds are mixed and bagged to the highest standards.
  2. Bagging in Paper Sacks: Once the seed mix is ready, we bag it by hand into strong paper sacks. Each sack is stitched at the top to seal in freshness and keep the seed secure. Paper sacks are environmentally friendly and perfect for bag sizes up to 6 kilos.
  3. Larger Bags in Woven Polypropylene: For bags of seed over 12.5kg, we use woven polypropylene bags. These bags are durable, re-usable, and recyclable, but more importantly, they allow us to ship the seed without extra outer packaging. This means less waste and a much greener solution for our customers. Plus, these bags can be reused around the home or farm. It’s worth noting that if you buy your birdfood in bags over 12.5kg in weight they are VAT free (saving 20%)

Why Our Method is Green and Cost-Effective
We’ve designed our process to be as efficient and eco-friendly as possible:

  • Low Overheads: In the summer, when our cows are out to pasture, we use the empty cowsheds to store the different seed types. In the winter, we store the individual seed components in the grain stores, keeping them ready to mix as new orders come in. This clever use of space means we avoid renting additional storage, which helps keep our overheads low. We pass these savings on to you.
  • Just-in-Time Production: We only mix and bag seeds as they are ordered. This means Wiggly Wigglers only buys stock as needed, keeping our process lean and avoiding overproduction or waste.
  • Environmentally Positive: By using re-usable bags for larger orders and reducing the need for outer packaging, we do significantly cut down on waste. Paper sacks for smaller orders are biodegradable, while our polypropylene bags are recyclable, giving customers eco-friendly options.
