We are lucky to have three ponds on the farm, and they are proving to be incredibly beneficial for both wildlife and the land itself. These water bodies not only serve as critical habitats for a range of species but also offer practical advantages, such as providing a vital water supply in emergencies. In fact, when a fire broke out recently, we were able to pull water directly from one of our ponds using a hosepipe, preventing the fire from spreading and causing more damage. This dual benefit of ecological support and emergency water supply shows just how essential these ponds are to our farm.

The Benefits of Our Ponds
1. Wildlife Haven
Each of our three ponds is a thriving ecosystem, offering breeding grounds and habitats for a variety of species. Amphibians like frogs, toads, and newts have made the ponds their home, using them for breeding and laying eggs. Meanwhile, a host of invertebrates such as dragonflies, damselflies, and aquatic beetles find food and shelter in the water, contributing to the farm’s ecological diversity<LINK to Herefordshire wildlife trust >
2. Water Supply and Fire Management
The practical benefits of our ponds go beyond supporting wildlife. With climate change bringing drier summers, having a reliable water source is vital. When we experienced a fire, our pond served as an emergency reservoir, enabling us to quickly draw water and contain the fire. By the time the fire brigade arrived we had the whole thing under control (almost!)
3. Supporting Biodiversity
The ponds have attracted a wide variety of birds, mammals, and aquatic plants. Water birds such as mallards and herons frequent the ponds, feeding on fish and amphibians. Meanwhile, the surrounding vegetation provides nesting sites and shelter for many species. These ponds act as biodiversity hotspots, creating interconnected ecosystems across the farm

Revitalizing an Ice Age or Ghost Pond
Recently, we partnered with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust to rejuvenate what we believed to be an ancient Ice Age pond or a ghost pond—a pond that had dried up over time but has now been revived. Whether this pond originated during the Ice Age or simply disappeared due to agricultural changes, restoring it has proven to be a fantastic decision. The rejuvenated pond now offers even more opportunities for wildlife to thrive while contributing to the conservation of ancient natural features.
Long-Term Benefits to Wildlife
Thanks to our three ponds and our collaboration with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, we’ve not only restored an important natural feature but also enriched the biodiversity of our farm. These ponds will continue to support wildlife, provide emergency water supplies, and enhance the beauty and ecological value of our land for many years to come.
