Our Cattle

Here, we don’t just farm cattle—we work with nature to create a sustainable, low-carbon farming system.
Our cattle thrive on fields where crops can’t grow, grazing on nutrient-rich grass from our pastures. It’s a true circular system: in winter our cows are fed on grass seed straw produced from our own crops, and in turn, they enrich the land. We’re focusing on high welfare standards, sustainability, and low-carbon practices to be efficient, eco-friendly, and with the aim of protecting the land for future generations.

Why Stabilisers?
We’re increasingly focusing on Stabilisers, a breed developed from Red Angus, Hereford, Simmental, and Gelbvieh cattle. This mix brings together the best traits from each breed, and they fit our farm’s ethos perfectly.
Here’s why:
- Hardy and Resilient - Stabilisers can handle the unpredictable British weather, whether it’s wet winters or dry summers. That means less stress for us, and healthier, more self-sufficient cattle.
- Top-Notch Meat Quality - Stabilisers are known for their well-marbled, tender beef. With a perfect balance of muscle and low fat, they produce premium beef that’s full of flavour, and perfect for customers who value quality.
- Low-Maintenance and Easy to Handle - These cattle are calm, easy to manage, and require fewer interventions, making life easier for us on the farm. Whether they’re out grazing or inside in Winter, Stabilisers adapt beautifully to whatever we need, keeping animal welfare at the forefront without adding extra work.
- Smooth Calving - With lower birth weights, cows deliver more easily, which means fewer complications and healthier calves. This ensures a smooth, efficient calving season and happier, healthier cattle.
- Perfect Size - Stabilisers are the ideal size: large enough to produce top-quality beef without the health issues of larger breeds. We can maintain more cattle without overgrazing, ensuring a balanced ecosystem.
- Perfect for Grass-Based Farming - Our cows and calves spend most of their time out in the fields. Stabilisers are made for this system. They thrive on pasture, making the most of our land while minimising feed costs. It’s a win-win for us, our cows, and the environment.
A Circular, Sustainable Farm
At Lower Blakemere, we are aiming to work with nature. We raise our cattle on fields that aren’t suited for crops, and we use crop by-products to feed them, creating a circular system that reduces waste and improves sustainability. Our cows, in turn, help regenerate the land, making the whole farm work together as one efficient ecosystem.
