Barley

We specialise in growing Basic and C1 Seed Barley, integral parts of the seed supply chain. Our seed harvest is subsequently multiplied by another seed grower before being sold to farmers, who then use them for food production, brewing, and as animal feed. Our barley seed production process is organised into several key stages:
1. Breeder Seed: This initial seed stock is obtained from trusted agricultural research institutions, ensuring each seed’s genetic purity.
2. Basic Seed: Grown from the breeder seed, this stage is managed under strict conditions to uphold purity and satisfy certification standards.
3. Certified Seed: This stage involves the cultivation of basic seeds to produce an even higher quality product.
4. C1 Seed: The final stage in our process, this seed meets all standards for health, purity, and germination, ready for commercial sale.
An essential aspect of our cultivation process is ‘roguing’, where we physically remove wild oats and other undesirable plants. This process protects the genetic purity of our barley crops. Coupled with our strategic crop rotation, these practices ensure robust growth in a nutrient-rich environment, while also helping prevent disease.
The Versatility of Barley
Barley is remarkably versatile:
- Brewing: It is essential for producing beer and whisky, thanks to its sugar content which is crucial for fermentation.
- Food Production: We use barley in a variety of foods, such as soups, breads, and cereals. Its high fibre, vitamins, and minerals make it a nutritious choice.
- Animal Feed: Barley serves as a nutritious, high-fibre feed for livestock like cattle and sheep.
Why We Choose to Grow Barley
Growing barley is not only economically viable but also environmentally sustainable. It thrives under the local conditions here in the UK, proving to be a reliable crop amidst the challenges of climate change. Additionally, barley is crucial in our crop rotation strategy, reducing our need for chemical interventions and helping us maintain healthy soil.
