From the outside, it can sound like we’ve all gone a bit dappy.
“Do less.”
“Let nature take over.”
“Have a cup of tea and watch the grass grow.”
The reality at Lower Blakemere is quite the opposite.
It’s more decisions, not fewer.
More attention. More head-scratching.
More walking fields wondering what on earth is going on in that patch over there.
It’s knowing your soil properly — not just what it should be doing, but what it is doing.
Field by field. Season by season. Sometimes day by day...
The point is there is no perfect system.
No “just do this and you’re regenerative.”
Every field behaves differently.
Every year throws something new at you.
And just when you think you’ve cracked it… you haven’t.
And no — it’s not about going backwards either.
We’re not chucking the tech out the window and reaching for a horse and plough.
We’re using data, machinery, biology, livestock — the lot —
to try and build better soil, grow decent crops, and keep the whole thing standing.
It’s not old versus new.
It’s using everything we’ve got — properly.
Regenerative farming, for us, is a great term to describe we are trying to do a better job this year than we did last year…
Some days we get it right.
Some days we absolutely don’t.
That’s farming.
